Nato a Boston, nel Massachusetts, si é trasferito molto spesso da bambino.Sin da piccolo ha ottenuto ruoli importanti in varie produzioni, tra cui Van Gogh alla New York's Mint Theater Company.
Ha studiato in Texas, laureandosi nel 1993.
Si é poi trasferito a Los Angeles e per 4 anni ha studiato recitazione alla scuola di teatro della University of Southern California fino al 1997.
E' apparso in numerosi film, nel ruolo dell'avvocato David Foil in "Erin Brockovich", quello di Gerald in "How high" e di Stu Lou Who in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", con Jim Carrey. Ha inoltre lavorato a Ghost World ed EdTV.
Per la televisione ha interpretato in pochi anni ben 45 ruoli, come quello di Wallace in molti episodi di "Walker Texas Ranger" e altri in "Friends", "Cold Case", "Nip/Tuck", "CSI: Crime Investigation", "Boston Legal", "CSI: NY" e recentemente in "The O.C." e "24".
Nella serie "Bones" interpreta l'entomologo Jack Hodgins.
